Accord to the EPA 15 miles in city and 20 miles on highway for the 2WD Explorer(Manual and Automatic).

The 4WD stick shift gets 15 city and 20 freeway. The automatic gets 14 city and 18 highway.

My car gets 5 miles less than what the EPA estimates. I got a tune up and now it helped an extra 2 miles. It also depends on how and where you drive. If you're going up hill there is nothing you can do to save gas.

Soft accelerations and brakes should help; always keep momentum on your side and constant speeds. Drive like your mother in-law is in the back seat and you should be able to save quite a bit on gas.

Depends on the engine. The 4.0 V-6 will get 20 mpg highway, the 4.6 v-8 will get 16mpg highway. I had a 98 that got well over 20 mpg.... new one gets 20.0 even with the 4.0
