Two types of training, ground school and practical training in the aircraft with your instructor.
Ground school teaches you the basics of aeronautics, navigation, FAA rule/regs, flight planning, etc.
The practical training is where you actually fly the plane under your instructor's supervision. There you learn the basic flying skills: take-off, landing, stalls, turns, etc. and putting what you learn in ground school to use.
You are required to have a minimum of 40 hours of instruction with a CFI. Most people take about 60-70 hours to complete their Private Pilot Certificate training.
