I have been searching and searching and all these sites want me to pay. BUt I really don't want to pay because what if I don't find anything then its like throwing money out of the window. If you know any good free sites let me know. I have already used ancestry.com/ my free trial is over and I couldn't afford to pay anymore, I did get a lot information but still have holes in my tree. Please help!

Hi
Well i guess you need to decide what your next step is as far as the info you have gathered from your free trial.
It is difficult to give you guidance without knowing how much and what specifically you have gathered.
You need to focus and decide if your next step should be vital records(which holds a wealth of good genealogy info--these are also known as birth death and marriage records) or census records, military records, You see, the first thing you should do is start with yourself and work backwards.
Write it out on paper it will help you see what the next step should be, and then maybe pay for sites like ancestry(i have a full subscription and have had for 7 years) would be worth it, there are some very good free sites that have been around since the birth of the internet, like
http://www.rootsweb.com
http://www.usgenweb.org/
http://www.accessgenealogy.com/
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/freegenealogy.shtml
and many more try google and surf..... I can help direct you if you know what your next step is, location, whom you are hunting for names dates etc.
Let me know and i will see how to lend you a hand ok?
Windy

www.familysearch.org
www.cyndislist.com
www.genealogy.com (has a forum site, too, where you can look up surnames to see if anyone is looking up the same people as you)

www.rootsweb.com (a "sister site" of ancestry.com)
www.gencircles.com

Try putting "free genealogy sites" in a search engine like Yahoo, Google, MSN, etc. and you'd be amazed at how many show up.
What names are you looking up?? Maybe I can help a little.

You can still use Ancestry for free by going to the library and using your library card for access. The library will either have a subscription to Ancestry or to Heritage Quest that you can use for the simple free price of your own personal library card. It might not be as convenient as sitting at home, but free is free, especially when you can also look up so many other records while you're there that you won't find on the internet.

Have you tried www.familysearch.org or
http://www.cyndislist.com/
Or you could post some dates, names, and places and let the excellent researchers that frequent this forum help you.
