How long is "a while"? Most stys go away on their own in 5-7 days, but they can last longer... You need to keep up the warm, wet compresses for at least that amount of time.
If it is painful or you have had it for more than a week, you need to go see your doctor. Here is a link that I hope will help:

I know this is going to sound crazy but it worked for me. I had one come up and my sister told me she saw a nurse put sugar into a ladies eye and the stye went away. Like I said...I know that sounds crazy but it did work. She sugar will not hurt but of course it will feel gritty for a minute.

There's an over the counter stye medication. I saw it at Target in the eye drops section. Try it.

Heat is probably the best treatment other than going to a doctor. The heat will help the sty come to a head and burst.

Other than that, go to a doctor. They probably will put you on antibiotics.

define "a while now", stys are self limiting, treated or untreated they go away on their own in about a month.
If you have had it longer than a month, yeah, you need to see a doctor.

You may have an infection. Sorry but the only way to cure an infection is with antibiotics.

I would go to the doctor. You could try and pop it yourself but that could cause problems.
