My new border collie/schnauzer mix won't stop splashing in his water bowl. Any ideas on why and how I can get him to stop? He is not hot because he will do it even after a long nap inside.

He is just playing... put a towel under the bowl and let him have at it...
there are worse things that he can do....

This is one of those things I've seen my dogs do at different times that always makes me smile..even if they created a minor lake on my kitchen floor. All my dogs have done it at one time or another, past, present, and I'm sure the future. They're just playing, having a bit of fun no different than a baby splashing water in their bath and I've seen my older dogs do it on a hot day outdoors to cool their feet. But if it's annoying you raising the bowl will help put a stop to it.

Put a couple golf balls in the water dish to make it harder to splash while still being able to drink. Then set up a plastic wading pool in his yard. He'll love splashing in the pool and may stop splashing in the water dish.

mine does that, oh and the cat stands next to the bowl and "digs" at the bowl too!
they must be a bad influence on eachother lol
i would get him a raised bowl. or just give him enough for 1 drink and pull it after he's done.
oh he also sticks his nose in the bowl... lays down ifo the bowl like a drunk praying to a toilet to drink... and don't even get me started about him in the kiddie pool lol

I'd keep the bowl picked up. When you give it to him to drink from it and he starts splashing take it away again. He will figure out that if he wants water he can't splash.
