People are darker because of high levels of Melanin. One of the functions of Melanin is to protect the person from sun burns, and the Melanin also pigments the skin. That is why people who live in areas with lots of direct sunlight have darker skin.

Darker pigment in skin protects people from sunburn.
People developed caucasian skin colour because they were living in the north where sunburn was no longer an issue, and lighter skin increases the amount of Vitamin D we absorb, I believe.
