GBS = Group B strep, a common bacteria in the female genital tract, but it can cause infection, meningitis, sepsis or lung infections in the infant. Your OB will initiate one of several standard antibiotic protocols to insure that your infant will be protected. The baby's pediatrician should also be aware of this. It is recorded on the delivery sheet.

(FYI: Group A Strep is the germ that causes strep throat)

It is a natural bacteria that is ok for us, but bad for babies- lots of women test positive for this. I did with my last daughter. They will give you antibiotics through an iv when you are in labor so that it does not make the baby sick when "passing through"... don't worry, it does NOT mean you're dirty or anything!~
