I know it is a matter of public record because I have seen it on the web and news papers when servicemen are tried in Military court, locked up and later discharged. I am looking for an easier way to find out about a specific person.

Did you try a google search? You can request any individuals FBI record under the freedom of information act. It will take some time, may cost some money (for copies) but you can get it.

You will not be able to get direct info from the military unless you are immediate family. Many of the cases you see in the media are there because they are the extreme cases..the most violent, the most shocking, the high profiles. It is the same as any other court system...we only read about the ones that catch the public's eye. That being said, military records are not public domain, even in cases like this. You can try a google search for the person, but unless it was reported in some media outlet you may not know. If you know the base the person was assigned to, you can search for a copy of that installations newspaper as they often list any disciplinary actions taking place.

Unless you are direct family, it will be somewhat difficult for you to access Military records. Usually what you see on the news are special cases. You can try calling a command or searching through google, but most Military officials will not give you any information because they don't have to.

there isn't one. Privacy Act applies. Not even family members can get records like that.
