Not really planning to.
Why did God pick this guy? Why not pick James Randi or Richard Dawkins? A hard core atheist becoming a Christian because God did this to him would be much more significant.
Why 'reappear' close to where he 'left'. This means that it can be attributed to a night terror and sleep walking.
Why not have him appear in St Paul's square in Rome during mass? Or in the middle of a live TV show? Something like that would convert millions.
Face it, at best this guy had a terrifying nightmare.
At worst we has worked out a way for millions of gullible people to give him money.
