The article mentioned above also stated that the number for the current 25 team had not been announced yet. I think that says that the 25 won't be the 25 any more. I think the move of Casey to the 5 was to keep the number 5 since it was team that Rick Hendrick's son started and he did not want to part with that number, the number 25 had no such tie, it was expendable.
If Rick has gone to Nascar for the # 81, I would say that is the number Jr will drive. Jr said he would drive a number with the 8 in it, so we will see. Personally I like the 83.

Dale Jr isn't getting the 83, the 83 is driven by Brian Vickers in the Red Bull Toyota. Red Bull choose the 83 at the beginning of the the year because the volume of a Red Bull energy drink is 8.3 oz.
I don't know why Dale Jr is being so bullheaded about his number and not just take the 5 if it about honoring his Grandfather from the outset. Ralph drove the 5 for one race in 1971 at the Dixie 400 Grand National race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. He finished 35th out of 42 cars after a transmission failure.
The 5 and the 25 both have an emotional connection to Rick Hendrick and his family and that neither of them is good enought for Jr just smack of selfishness.

It most likely will be the 81. I saw some sketches in the front office yesterday with the 81 on the car.
Besides the 25 is somewhat cursed!

They actuall had a leak from nascar.
they have requested the #83 driven by a rookie this year.
but nascar has to approve the # switching teams.
but that would be #8 and #3.
they also said what ever number JR gets it will have an 8 in it.

Why don't he just take a number and drive the car? It always has to be a big, drawn out drama of some kind. If it was me, I would worry about my driving more than my car number.

I agree with lil Scooby the 25 is expendable. Smart move by HMS, I'll bet he did that so the #5 keeps Kellogs as well since they had contracts with them.
I was rooting for the #38 but looks like that fell through.
