In United States fries are said to be of French origin and that's why they are thus named “French fries;” but once in France all French invariably say that fries are of Belgian origin.

What to think about “French toasts,” by the way? There is just no such a thing in France!!!

it referrs to the style of cut.

the potatoes have been 'french cut' or 'frenched'

I stopped using the word french, years ago.

French, Belgium... same location over there in that continent. Close enough.
