I do ask them if I can. If for some reason I can't ask them, like if I read about their situation in the newspaper or something like that, then I'll pray anyway. I don't think I've ever prayed in front of anyone in person, but online sometimes I'll type a prayer for them that they can see...because the Bible says that where 2 or more are gathered in his name, he's in their midst. When you pray with someone and they agree with you in prayer, that's 2 people gathered in his name.
Edit: There's a lot to be said for what Shawn B said above ^.. Faith without works is dead.. If you are able to help someone through a situation, you should.

Funny you should ask. Usually, I have people asking me to pray for "them" or a loved one. And when I do pray, it is always away from others. I never pray in front of anyone. That time is between God and myself- period.

Sometimes I ask if I can pray and I pray with them-- but most of the time I pray on my own for others.. or in groups of others, like at church or fellowship-- bible studies ( when I used to go! Ahh I miss it!)
But sometimes others need to pray with someone right then and there- and that is always good.

I ask for permission before I pray for people, because I know some people may not be comfortable with my concept of Deity, and if they'd rather I didn't pray to the God and Goddess on their behalf, that's their right.

Depends on the person. Some you just pray for on your own and others would probably ask. Some people I don't want to put on the spot or make them uncomfortable. I think God will put people in your life who will come to you.

Depends on the situation. I normally pray without asking permission. It is God I am talking to, not them. And if the situation is right to do it with them (in front of them) I will.
In over 50 years I have yet to have an unanswered prayer.

If I am in that person's presence, yes I ask them if they want me to pray, then I ask if they would like me to pray with them. If they say no, I pray for them by myself, out of their presence.

Does believers mean those Christy people?
I might pray FOR someone if they asked me to, or pray WITH someone if they asked me to.
I believe that thinking positive thoughts about people does not harm, and, indeed, keeps them in your mind.
I had a cousin with OI (Osteogenesis Imperfecta) and when she was in the hospital with this or that broken bone, thinking positive thoughts about her (I was an atheist at the time) kept her in my mind, so her mom was always surprised when I showed up with a small gift or something because I was in the area.
I see no harm in that.

There are times that I ask someone if they would like for me to add them to my prayers. Even ask them if it's okay to pray specifically for them.
There are times that I ask if they would like for me to pray right then and there...and if they would like to join me in prayer.
There are times that I pray for others without any "beforehand'. As an example, I pray daily for followers of false gods that they might come to open their hearts and minds to the love and mercy of the one true God, and come to accept salvation of their eternal souls thru His Son, Jesus.
There are times that I bless in God's name.
There are many gifts from God. It's up to US to use them to help us in our daily lives.
Bless you for your question.

I pray for none, not even myself. I like to be fair, so if I were to pray for one person, I'd have to pray for everyone in this and every other possible (and many impossible) universe. That's far too tedious for me.
