You may only adjust your status in the country if you are currently in a legal status. So yes, you have to go home.

It might be too late. From what I understand starting in 2008 you'll no longer be able to apply for citizenship just because you've married a citizen ( like you used to be able to do) if you're currently still "illegal" . Talk to an immigration lawayer or specialist. With all the changes going on now there are tons of immigration specialists out there willing to help.
and don't listen to all the racists giving retarded advice about going back.

Did your wife file a petition for you before April of 2001? If so you may be grandfathered and may have a chance at a green card...if not then no you cannot become a citizen or a resident...good luck!

If you entered the country illegally, I do not believe there is anyway for you to gain citizenship. You'll have to leave the country and then apply for citizenship.
Obviously not the answer you're looking for, but your entry was against US law. Simply getting married will not make that go away.

YOUR WIFE WILL HAVE TO FILE A PETITION FOR YOU AND THEN IF THE GOVERNMENT RESQUESTS FOR YOU TO LEAVE THEN IT WILL BE A PERIOD OF 6 TO 18 MONTHS FOR YOU TO COME BACK.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU KEEP YOUR MORALCHARACTER POSITIVE SINCE THIS MIGHT PLAY A BIG ROLE IN READMITTING YOU IN THE UNITED STATES.
