It is the wet season in the tropical north. You will get rain and thunderstorms on most days and the chance of tropical cyclones. Some areas will be inaccessible because of flooded rivers and roads. You will be able to get to the Barrier Reef and most places of interest but be prepared for rain.

In Sydney these are the hottest months with March being the wettest. January is a great time to be in Sydney because of the Festival of Sydney that starts with the New Years Eve fireworks. There is a lot going on in January including the big free concerts in the Domain such as Opera in the Park, Symphony Under the Stars and the Australia Day Concert. February has the month long Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival culminating in the parade the last weekend in February or the first weekend in March.

Central Australia can be very hot indeed at that time of the year with temperatures regularly over 40°C. If you are going to Alice Springs and Uluru, be prepared for the heat and don't even think about climbing the Rock.

Closer to the date, look up What's on in Sydney

Heya. January is stilll the summer hols over here, kids out of school etc, so things are a bit more expensive (especially accommodation), and you'll also get crowds. The weather doesn't really start to cool off till late April. Jan Feb Mar are the hottest months. The further north you go the more humid it gets (on the coast especially). Depends what you like. If you are from a cold climate you'll probably not want to leave. Cheers

Anytime is best to visit the Great Barrier Reef - Cairns.
Yes it is the wet season but it does not rain everyday ... in fact it can still go weeks without rain. As for a cyclone. Chances of one of those hitting is one every few years, and well, we had one last year.
