I agree with you and think you are absolutely right! Religious or spiritual beliefs is no one else's business. A spiritual relationship is between yourself and the god you choose to believe in... and not another human being. I think people go to extremes in religion because they are insecure and scared...the more people they get on 'their side' the stronger they feel in their faith. It seems to be human nature to want to belong to something. It would be nice to see the day when everyone respects other people no matter what religion, beliefs, race or colour they happen to be. I am still waiting but i won't hold my breath !

Religion is essentially a way of explaining the world, and to accept it completely is comforting.
But, by definition, any religion's way of explaining the world will contradict ( or be contradicted by) other religions or ways of explaining the world.
.
So if a person needs his/her religion and find it disputed or even contradicted by other beliefs/faiths then his/her whole view of the world is under attack.
And if you feel your fundamental way of explaining your place in the world is under attack, well, some people get quite peevish.
In Europe most people place religion on 'the back burner' i.e. it is something they do on Sundays, leaving the rest of the week to get on with their lives.
But some are extreme.
And more are in the USA.
And maybe even more in certain Moslem countries.
Rule of thumb. . the better educated the population, the less the extremism.
So the worse educated the more likely extremism will arise.

Religions demand blind obedience.
On the other hand, faith is a lifestyle that recognises fully both humanity & deity, that you've been given a mind both to question and believe as well as work out the truth when things insisted on by religious nutters fail.

people can go to extremes in anything they feel passionate about. also it can be a form of brainwashing if you get them while you're young and it's done cleverly. also some people just have this tendency in personality

There is no point in doing something half heartedly.....if you do it means you don't really believe it yourself, and if you don't really believe it you are simply doing it out of duty or to impress others. If you believe something then go for it as long as others are not hurt.
