With regards to a standard liberal education found today in the United States. I'm assuming that one is opposite of the other.

don't confuse 'liberal arts' with the political term liberal.

Actually no. The term "liberal" education as it is used now means relates more to the concept of the liberal arts. In particular it is used in contrast to an education, thought of as more focussed and practical but less fundamental, in areas such as business, technology, perhaps the natural sciences though I'd quarrel with that myself. Generally speaking, getting a B.A. degree is the getting of a liberal education. In some respects a liberal education in this sense is a conservative education as it harkens back to an older sense of what a univesity education should be.
