I am 25 a male, and have had some college credits, and I have done pretty good at the ASVAB, I was wondering if anyone knows of any jobs that will allow me to be on shore most of the time? I have a 2 year old daughter and would like to spend time with her. My girlfriend has a uncle in the Navy and he was served for 14 years and he has a job where he goes home every day like a regular 9-5 job. so does anyone know of any shore duty jobs?

if you are not married, you are considered a single parent and CANNOT enlist.

as for what jobs do not have sea duty: CTI and any of the SeaBee ratings. Caveat: they STILL deploy, and in the case of the SeaBees: frequently. DIRSUP in the CT community is shore duty.. that isn't, as you will still be getting underway from time to time, or otherwise sent TAD.

Otherwise, sea/shore rotations vary from 5/3 to 2/2 years. any of the CT ratings are more about CONUS and OCONUS rather than Sea/Shore duty, although there are plenty of PCS afloat billets for CTR, T, and M. CTN is still fairly new, the rotation hasn't really been established.

Things to consider: any of the 'traditional" land lubber jobs- SH, SK,CS, YN, PS etc are being contracted out to civilians on shore meaning more sea duty for them

Bottom line: the Navy is all about being at sea. EVERYBODY deploys.

Some Good Jobs

I was in the regular Navy for 4 years and the TAR Program for 16. See a Naval Reserve recruiter and ask about the TAR (Training and Administration of Reservists) Program. If you are in the right field, most of your time will be spent at Reserve Centers and shore bases. As a Yeoman I was stationed ashore in Patuxent River, MD; Norfolk, VA (2 tours); Cincinnati, OH; and San Antonio, TX.

Check out the intelligence rates like CTM, CTR, CTT. I was an EW (Electronic Warfare) but, I believe that my old rate was combined into the CTT rate. I can’t guarantee that there was no sea time but, that’s what being in the Navy is all about. Hit the seas man. See the world!

The Navy is all about sea time....your a sailor so your out to sea for at least some of your career...look into rates like CTT or IT's if your Asvab score is high enough...good luck!

Civil Engineering in any branch or the military is a good idea, it has a good future when you get out to. BTW civil engineering is construction. This will not 100% keep you onshore, there's no jobs that offer that gaurantee, but this job stays in the US until they are needed in another area of the world. Good Luck

Avoid Engineering and Air-dale rates. Other than that there is always the possibility of being on a Ship. The only rates that aren't are seabees but they are guaranteed to deploy to Iraq.
