The language spoken in Romania is not similar to any other language in the Balkans or Southern Europe. So where are its origins and where do Romanian people have their roots?

Romania originated from Latin. Rome was the capital of the Roman Empire and the ancient Romans conquered the land which they named Romania. However, because it is so near to the Balkans, it was also influenced by the Slavic languages: Russian, Polish, etc. So, although Romanian is classified w/the other Romance languages: French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, it is very different from all of them. Keep in mind that the term "romance languages," has nothing at all to do with love or romance; it's from Rome and the Romans.

The Romanian language descended from Latin, as did Spanish, Italian, Catalan and others, but due to Romania's location the language developed quite differently from other Latin based languages, also picking up Slavic elements. It's a really beautiful language and very interesting.

Romanian is considered one of the 5 "romance" languages: those languages that derived directly from Latin as the Roman empire spread its influence across Europe. The other romance languages are: Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and French.
