In CA:

Sonoma: Free up to as much as $20 for a "reserve" tasting
Napa: Very few free, most at least $5 and up
Sierra Foothills: Most still free, some $5 or so, many allow a souvenir glass to be kept as part of the fee.

Most wineries will refund the fee with a purchase.

Addition: If you stick to smaller, more family run or intimate wineries, you have a better chance of having free tasting. Part of the fees (in my own opinion) are to ward off the masses of drinkers/partiers that mob into well known wineries and never buy anything. Also, if there is a fee and you are with someone you really like, you can just buy one tasting and split each taste with the person, or if there are limits (4 tastes per person, for example) you can buy two, but each try different wines and share. That way you get to taste 8 different wines, instead of both having the same 4.

At the wineries around here (Southern Missouri) wine tastings are free. In the fall Public television puts on a fund raiser that is a wine and food tasting. It typically costs around $30.00.

It really depends but you want to make sure that most everyone who is consuming the wine will like it as well as will the wines pair with your menu. I'd suggest chardonnay, but not a heavily oaked one. also, Sauvignon Blanc and an off dry Chenin Blanc are lovely wines at a wedding. As for reds, a lot of people like Gamay, Pinot Noir, and Merlot, and there is always the bigger wine, Cabernet Sauvignon. If I had to choose, I'd choose 2 whites and 2 reds. Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc, and Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. You can't go wrong.

That's a wide-open question, very dependent upon each winery.
I would never pay more than $20... after all, they're looking to turn you into a customer anyway. They can afford to let you taste the product.

it depends on the winery. I would google the winery and check out their website they usually post their prices for wine tasting there.

Free in central Jersey, but because of size/space constraints, they are by invitation only (you have to be on the mailing list) and you need to make a reservation.
