Any of the following toys would be developmentally appropriate for a 1 year-old:

Stacking/nesting toys, cloth baby doll, board books, toy telephone, blocks, push and pull toys.

If you want to make it really simple there is a website that sells developmentally appropriate toys according a child's age. You can buy just a single toy or a gift series that sends a toy every 3 months or so for a year. It is: http://www.ebeanstalk.com/

look up kay bee toys and toys r us websites.

toys r us has a catagory area on the left where you can look for toys for a 1 yr old female.

at her age, they go thru clothing quite fast, maybe a cute little outfit with shoes to match,

if she is in a cold climate, winter is coming soon and maybe a nice snowsuit might be nice or a nice warm blanket to wrap her in.

learning toys are always gleefully accepted, the kind of thing that she can sit with and doodle with. young minds get bored fast so it needs to have a lot of things that make sounds and move around or spin and the like.

if he is a simple guy and is known to by necessity items then a really large box of diapers in her size would also be a welcome gift.

probably anything Dora, Hello Kitty, or perhaps a stuffed animal from build a bear workshops. My two close friends both have 2 daughters and anything Dora or Hello kitty works fine. But be warned stay away from things a 1 year cannot use such as a Dora bookbag or notebook, purse, etc.

I have a niece the same age! Honestly, at one year old, clothes is the best way to go. Or a cool educational toy with no small parts.

Since the baby is only 1 she probably doesn't even understand what a present is. So instead of racking your brain for the perfect get keep it simple. Buy here a couple of cute outfits she can wear.

For eductional toys that are affordable, legos and building blocks are neat. They are offered in all different stages so make sure you read the box. Also, I find the "Teddy Ruckspin" toy cool. I had it when I was little. It reads stories. THey best thing for her now is to develope a love for learning and reading is a good place to start.

I got my 1 yr old twin boys a walk and ride from Wal*mart. She can use it as a walker so she can learn to walk herself or it turns into a lil car and she gets on and pushs with her feet. It'll cost you about 30 bucks. My two boys love that thing, so I would go with that but totally up to you.

At one year she is not aware of the occation but is aware of the things she likes to play with, those that make noise/music and move by themselves. Just be careful with small parts. I would strongly recommend a music top (large) that someone else winds, makes music, and moves. And she will enjoy playing with it for years!

yes, united states savings bonds...they can be purchased at any bank and online at www.treasurydirect.gov and he will have to open an account, he'll need his ss#, driver's license number, bank account numbers, etc. and to get her ss#. i suggest going online, you won't receive an actual paper bond but an online account which can be accessed securely with any computer, or you can call them. after one year if this needs to be cashed in, the money will go right to the owner the next day...in their savings or checking account, any account, to your bf, to his neice's account, or to the parents' account.

http://www.treasurydirect.gov/indiv/research/indepth/ibonds/res_ibonds_ibondslooklike.htm this is what savings bonds look like if you purchase them at the banks, you will recieve one in around a month after purchasing them.

the lowest denomination will be a 50.00 he can purchase and i highly suggest he buy the savings bond in her name and list himself secondary as an owner under his social security number. we do this alot. the social security number is just to register it and not to cash in. therefore, the parents if they divorce or separate won't be able to take the money. we recieved savings bonds for our children and to me, those were the most appreciated gifts. it will take around 20 minutes to set up the account online, but after it's set up, it will be well worth it. she doesn't need toys or clothing, she'll get all that. she doesn't need a gift card from walmart to spend on the parents needs/wants. i highly suggest that because later on, the neice can look back and see what all her uncle got her, she'll be able to use this for a house, car, schooling, or whatever she chooses when the time is right. also, once he sets this account up online, which is government run and completely safe by the way, others can add to this account and it will state who bought the bonds. i suggest getting "i" bonds instead of "e" bonds, they have higher interest rates. any questions or need help, i'm no accountant but we got a ton of bonds for our two girls and i will help you in any way i can. also, it's a good idea with all the recalls going on with the toys right now!
