I am an elementary teacher. I would never recommend leaving a child a bus stop alone. There is a lot of sickos out there! If there are other children at the bus stop, then I would say about third grade. There are a lot of factors: inner city, suburbs, rural.... It is always better to be a little over protective than to have to have regrets.

Not only does it depend on the maturity of the child, but it also depends on what kind of neighborhood you live in and where the bus stop was located. When I was young the bus stop was at the end of my street, so my mom could see me when I was standing there from our house. So she would just watch me get on the bus. But my sister had to turn the corner and walk another block. This was also the same street that a registered sex offender lived. Needless to say, my sister is 15 and she still gets walked or driven to the bus stop a block away.

Although I trust my child, I don't trust strangers. Walking to a bus stop or just waiting there makes children easy prey. Maybe another mom can pick up your child and take them where they need go. Be safe, not sorry.

kids are being abducted everyday walking or waiting for the school bus, doesn't matter how mature they are or what area they live in, i would not let a child walk or wait at a bus stop without a parent with them PERIOD.

Well - are there other kids there ? I'd say 12 but I also don't send my 13 year all alone but I can't see the stop from home and the reports of strangers in the district every so often is enough for me to be cautious..
So know your child, know your neighbors and its honestly up to the sort of neighborhood - and maturity of the child.

My daughter is 9, but there are a bunch of other kids at the stop too and 2 adults that wait with there kindergarten age kids. I started letting her do it last year in 3rd grade.

My son (my oldest) who is 10 now was ready when he was in kindergarten. He would get little safety awards and compliments all the time on how mature and careful he was at crossing the street, getting on the bus and following safety rules. However.....my daughter who is in 1st grade would chase a bug out on to the busy street without a 2nd thought. I don't know ~when~ my daughter will be ready but clearly she isn't as saftey oritended as my son was, lol. It depends on the child. I had no fear sending my son out because I knew he was ready, but the way things are going, I may be walking my daughter to school when she's in High School. ;) You're the mom - you know better than anyone if your child will be safe. And sometimes, as mom's...if we're not ready when they are....it won't kill them to wait a little longer just to give us piece of mind. :)
