Hi Ironhead...

The first thing you should look in a bike is that it fits you. Also, you have to find out what type of riding you would like to do in order to find the best bike for your fit, purspose and budget.

If you want to do long distance cycling, probably a XC hardtail would be the best option.

If you want to do a bit of everything except jumps and drops, and don't mind a bit of weight, an all mountain, trailbike or whatever is a good bet, probably a full suspension.

If you want to do jumps and drops, find a full suspension freeride bike. As well if you want to do fast descents over everything, even if it means you have to shuttle to the top, go for a downhill bike.

Don't buy the first bike you find in your price range. Shop around and take some notes. There is really not one that is head and shoulders better than an other when you get into the $1000 range. Shop around and buy the best spec'd bike for the dollars to be spent. With the 2008 models on the way you should be able to find some great close-out deals.

There are a lot of good brands out there. It has more to do with good components and the style of bike you are looking for, i.e. downhill, cross country or all mountain. Look for Shimano XTR, Deore XT or Deore Lx, Sram X-0, X-9 or X-7 components. If you are planning to spend up to $1000, I would go with a hardtail. The only good rear suspension rigs are going to cost more that a $1000 and you'll save on weight.

there's a lot of good mt. bike out there - it all depends on your budget and how much are you willing to spend on a MT. bike. It could go from 300-$6,000. I would go to a local bike shop test ride some of the bike that they have. Specialized and Cannondale's are good bikes. but if you looking for a high end bikes you can check out , Turner, Ellsworth, Santa Cruz, Litespeed, Merlin, and more.

These should fir your budget. The rest, just like posters above me suggested, do visit a local bike store (LBS) not a Wallmart with what I call "toy" bikes. Your choice will largely depend on how you want to ride and $$ limit. The rest is easy.

Please visit this link as well, to help you narrow down a little:

There are too many different brands/ frame choices/ component options to list. I ride a Surly and a Kona. Everyone has a GiantTrekCannonFisher. Be different.

Do you have a budget? What you can afford will dictate alot of what we would recommend...

Edit:

Oops..lol. Also other criteria like hardtail, front suspension or full suspension...
