Fudge - can be found in specialty shops
Shortbread - representing Scotland
Leeks - representing Wales
A Rose - representing the north of England
A book by Shakespaere to represent the west of England
A Constable picture to represent East Anglia
Devon clotted cream to represent the West Country or perhaps some cider from the West Country or some beer from the Dorset region.
A good strong cheddar might be difficult to transport.
Perhaps a visit to Harrods for something English to represent the south.

There is a suggestion for marmite in the answers. Be careful with US customs, I think it is illegal to take marmite into US due to it being a yeast based product. They might, given the climate at the moment, overreact a bit. It would be funny though, from an observers point of view, someone be arrested for marmite. I'm not sure what the explosive qualities of marmite are though.

It's good on toast.

How about, if it doesn't upset US customs, a pot of soil from on of the London Parks.

My grandmother who is in England would send us:

Marks and Spencer items
Rock candy
Licorice candy (all sorts, torpedoes, sticks)
Yardley items
Cadbury chocolates.

Or you can try souvenier items with the Bristish Flag on.
You can try items also with the Queen or Prince's stamp of approval or appointment.

Heres another idea: How about the British Version of Harry Potter?

Just a thought. Good luck and Happy Shopping!

Ta!

I sent my daughters mother in law a fab print of an old English map depicting the discovery of America, she had it framed and loves it.
I bought it at the Greenwich Maritime Museum , they have lots of other interesting things too and are better quality than many souvenirs. They have an on-line catalogue .
You might also like to check out Lilliput Lane miniature cottages and quaint British buildings, they make a nice gift too and are readily available at jewellers and department stores.

I would suggest a little hamper of English foods, H.P. Sauce, Black Pudding, Clotted Cream, Crab pate, any form of game pate or pie with a decent chutney or pickle. Too many things to choose from. You could take them some English clothing from Saville Row or Jermyn Street, a nice tie or shirt for any men from Hilditch and Key or a nice blouse or neck scarf for any ladies. A pair of boots by Blacks.

We ripped tea from the chinese.

Bring a londoner attitude like Londoners do best.

Everyone wants to live in london, we used to own the world, everyone is jealous and wants to live in london, london is wealthy.

Then give them a union jack flag to complete the gift and be deeply offended if they dont put it on the top of they house.

British chocolate is always a hit with Americans, and they get a kick out of Digestive biscuits too!
