I agree that most people are religious because they were raised in a religious environment from a young age, just like culture and social behavior is transmitted from person to person.

I think that everyone is born agnostic, meaning they have no concept of a god or any information to suggest that it exists or does not exist. Atheism is usually the natural result of skeptical thinking, once a person gets older and begins to analyze their religious beliefs using empirical methods.

There are many religions practiced by billions of believers. Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism are a few of the largest faiths. If I were born in Saudi Arabia, I would be Muslim, as other religions are banned. If I were born in the Middle Ages in Western Europe, I would be Christian. If I were born in Africa prior to Colonialism, I would probably have indigenous beliefs, etc. I'm only an atheist because I live in a country where I am free to study and analyze religion.

Yes. Although it may not always be parents that do the damage.

To KD and others making a similar point. Inevitably, every child is born without any belief. They do not know about god, fairies, santa claus or any of the other myths or tales that societies across the world teach their children about. Whether those beliefs be serious, or silly, like santa and the tooth fairy. Therefore they do not believe in a god and they are atheist at birth. They will remain that way either until the concept is introduced to them or they conceive it themselves at a more advanced age.

You and some others are assuming that atheism is a conscious decision not to believe, or as some people put it, assuming a belief system. It is not. It is simply the absence of a belief in a god. Just like we all have the absence of a belief in a 97 ft high invisible doughnut in my garden. Nobody has made a conscious decision not to believe that doughnut exists.

By your own device of referring to a child lacking a point of reference at birth, it must be atheist because of course it cannot have a reference to god (or even very many other even simpler concepts).

For the same reason a new born cannot be agnostic. A person has to understand the concept of god first, before he/she can decide that the existence of a deity is unprovable.

All religions are based on the reliable beginning of the human lack of self belief - from which we've suffered over a millennium or greater and nonetheless suffering. non secular books are frequently own comments, perspectives blended with beneficiant helpings of colourful memories to make it sound important - very like the decorative rain-dance of the tribal priest - who knew plenty beforehand the right arrival of monsoon. So faith is an surprising get away for very nearly all our insecurities. And so are the numerous philosophies which capture us each and every now and then - if somebody says that 1000 years of journey, remark and information is going into it ... then he could desire to savor that awareness being incomplete - all such information is likewise incomplete and could continuously bring about conflict in our recommendations. faith has additionally been the final killer so a techniques ! a newborn is born ignorant - all of us are - and then the perspective ( in maximum situations lack of self belief) builds them - and of direction there are circumstances while a guy builds his very own perspective with a reliable beginning of thinking and reason. a individual who isn't guided by ability of concept or awareness is the main happiest individual - like the ignorant newborn or the mindless mad guy we come throughout the time of each and every particularly situations - they are able to somewhat chuckle ! we are happy until awareness and its by ability of goods corrupts our recommendations.

Yes children are open books waiting for all types of information to be written in their pages, and when young have no way of knowing what is right and wrong until shown, that is why we as parents have a huge responsibility to guide our children along the right path and give them good grounding so that they can then make their own dicisions and lead indipendent lives. Choosing whatever religion, popgroup, partner, job etc, suits them. My parents never forced any religion upon me, as they decided that when I was old enough I should make a choice myself. I would not have expected them to choose what job I would grow up to take! so why should they choose my religion?

Yes, but you could also apply that thinking to any moral code. If you are born into an atheist family they're still going to bring you up according to what they think is morally right or wrong.

I would hope that most people by the time they get to mid teens should be able to think for themselves and decide whether they still want to follow their parents' religion.

This is possibly true for some faiths, but not for Christianity. My atheist parents had some influence on my beliefs, but I met Jesus for myself when I was 28. True Christians have had an experience of Jesus and have spiritually awakened, so even if you go to church and pray a lot you aren't a christian until you have accepted Jesus in your heart. So you have to mean it, it's a choice not a family thing.

No one is born with any belief . In most cases is the patents who choose which belief the child should follow. My parents were christian and I went to church till I was 14 and that wasn't my choice it was their choice. As soon as I was old enough to make my choices, I told them that I don't want to be a Christian, therefore I'm going to choose my own path of not having any religion.

Parents teach their children about religion because in their early years, kids are too young to go out and discover God for themselves. When they grow older, they are free to choose whichever path they like.
And seeing as all religions preach love and tolerance in the main, there is no harm in growing up living by these principles.

You aren't actually born athiest and here's why. To be athiest is to say you do not believe in god. When you are born, there is no point of reference to compare your thoughts, ie; "god" so the answer is: When you are born, you are very simply a human or biological organism known as human and just like all animals, you would learn from what is around you. You wouldn't know to call yourself "athiest" because you would not use "god" as the defining criteria for your thoughts or actions.
