Get a will done a.s.a.p. - If you can get an attorney, but if not get a self help packet at a local book store and draw your own up. If you can't do that, depending on what state you're in, you can hand write your wishes and have it notarized and witnessed by 2 people and that should be valid.

Regardless if you are leaving the country, or going to work everyday, there is always a chance of anyone dying. As soon as you have a child you must get a will drawn up, preferrably by a lawyer, or financial adviser.
In this will you will state who will take care of your child, whether it's a friend or relative. I would also suggest getting life insurance, because taking care of a child is going to cost someone money. You will also need to "appoint" someone to being in charge of that trust money to care for your child.
I would do this asap, it would give you a piece of mind. This is part of the reality of being a responsible parent. When your talking about your child, should the minimum effort do? I wouldn't rely on a notary document, just think about your child ending up in foster care, or an orphanage, that's just the reality of it.
Just find a good lawyer and get started. Good luck.
No, the godparent is just a religious symbol, not any legal ties to this person.

A notarized letter would be good, a will is better. A judge will look at your preferences first.

It would be a good item to include as part of a will. That way you could address multiple issues together.
