Babylon 5 is probably the most similar to the kind of Star Trek idea, although in my opinion B5 is much better than ST ever was, since it tells a single coherent story over the course of 5 series, and a great story at that.

Farscape is also very good, and has plenty of aliens, although I would have said it has more the feel of a glossier Blake's 7 about it.

I watched the new Battlestar Galactica recently, and I have to say I was a bit disappointed with it after all the great things I had heard.

Doctor Who is probably the most popular Science Fiction series on TV at the moment and is by far the longest running (my favourite TV series of all time in fact, since I started watching it in 1963). It also has plenty of aliens, but it isn't really like Star Trek at all, since its based more on time travel than on space travel, and in recent series has a lot of episodes set on Earth.

Farscape was great series, US astronaut gets caught in wormhole ends up in...we don't know where really, meets bunch of escape prisoners on strange living alien ship with its pilot and ends up helping them (loving one) and fighting their battles against well lets not give it all away, but there are aliens galore, goodies & badies and a wizard of Oz theme of getting home.

Space western theme with aliens to be found in Joss Whedon's Firefly (leading to film Serenity). This was a great show which sadly was only appreciated by (in US terms), a few and then by the time everyone loved Serentiy, of course the show had gone and now much missed.

Battlestar Galactica the original series had similar theme of the big family and the wizard Oz thing of getting home, the acting, the sets and the effects along with great story lines have made this a great show and I'm hoping it will continue although a friend of mine says she thinks it's entering final phases.

For a laugh you could take yourself back in time and revisit Blake's Seven, don't get me wrong I loved that show first time around. Should have cherished the memories though cos it hasn't stood the test of time well, but in it's day it worked well. Quirkly element, having baddie not just female but having her wear full evening wear- ball gown chic. However Jacqueline Pierce (hope that's right), was a terrific baddie, and lifted the show several notches.

Hope that helps.

I would recommend Farscape Lot's of aliens and is also a bit of a laugh.
Battlestar Galactica (the new one) is probably the best of the lot however you don't see too many alien races except the cylons but the battle scenes are superb.
Any of the Stargate's are also good.

There is Doctor Who, the main charactor is an alien, but wouldn't say it's similar to start Trek.

There is also Babylon 5, which looks like it's making a limited return.
Farscape is another excellent show. Just a shame they cancel it.
