They are being expanded as you type. I just spoke with a state police officer who works for the counter terrorism task force. They are now speaking to EVERY foreign national with open felony charges.

The ability of the FBI to, without warrant and in an ever-increasing scope, gather intelligence with existing "friendly fire" type legislation rammed thru Congress under the radar of most of the voters, need not be "expanded". Ordinary law enforcement investigations have already proven to be the most effective in identifying & apprehending terrorists, both potential and proactive. There's enough skill & gadgetry out there already in use--further no-warrant invasiveness in the lives and daily occasions of the population should not be required. A good cop can do a lot more with less, while the pencil-necked nameless spooks, who depend on a passive citizenry and secret devices to get the same job done at twice the price, should not be given more toys....nor should they be given carte blanche to make straw-man cases that cannot be backed up by either case law or solid evidence. If Richard Lindh and Jose Padilla are all they've come up with thus far, then adding more invasions of privacy won't get it done either.

The so called alphabet list of so called intelligence agencies are as thick as flies on dog droppings now and get nothing done; what makes you think having more of them stumbling around would get anything done?
