I love my Honda CRV. There is also a Honda Pilot if you are looking for something bigger. When I bought my car, I was working at Enterprise RAC. I asked the New Car, Used Car, and Maintenance Departments. They all said a Honda or Toyota as they are the most reliable while not taking a huge chunk out of your pocketbook with repairs. My CRV gets about 28-30 MPH. It is small enough to fit in most car spaces with the height of an SUV.
As far as payments go, figure out with your financial institution how much car you can buy with that payment for however many months you want. That will give you a good place to start. If you tell the Dealership you want a payment of 350.00/ month, they may give you the option of a 7 year loan with a little higher interest. If they are offering better interest rates at the dealership, then go with that, but at least you know that with your bank what the MAX interest you would have to pay is. Good luck and Happy shopping

It's not a good way to buy a car based on monthly payments you can afford. If you have GOOD credit and go to a dealer and tell them you want to pay $350 a month, they'll sell any car you want, but they'll just finance it for a longer term. You'll get your $350 a month payments for 6 years, but 2 years down the road you'll be "upside down." You'll still have 4 years to pay and owe more than the car is worth.
When financing a car, you should negotiate the price of a car, not the payments.
As for which SUV to get, there are a million of them now. Select one you like and can afford (not the payments, but the price of it.)

If you need off-road ability, check out the Toyota 4Runner. It comes with all kinds of trail gadgets in a high quality, reliable package.
If you stay on the road, try the Toyota Highlander. It's a very sophisticated, premium cross-over with optional hybrid-electric drive.
I don't know how the financing would end up on either of those, but the low depreciation should help lower the payments.

I am paying $230 on a 27 months lease ($0 downpayment and no trade in) on a Brand New 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee... Even Honda CRV was more expensive. See if you can find anyone to give you Chrysler Employee discount and you should be able to get a great deal.

Toyota 4Runner, Acura MDX, Honda CRV, Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Nissan Murano, Infiniti FX35.
All very nice and very reliable SUV's. The 4Runner is the best overall in my opinion, but the Acura OR Infiniti will probably be more upscale.

You begin looking in the used car classifieds. If you want to lower your payments, you gotta buy used.
Unless you want a Kia or a Suzuki you need to look for a good used SUV priced under $20,000.

I've got a 1998 Chevy Blazer with a 4.3l and it does okay off road. It comes standard with a LSD in the rear, works great during the winter.
