As a former drug and alcohol abuser (and victim of job burn-out and failed relationships), my dopamine levels are pretty much shot. So far, the best biological therapy for me so far has been to take L-tyrosine and L-tryptophan (amino acids), AND make sure to get sufficient sleep every night. But if anybody knows any "tricks", has any wisdom or factual knowledge, or any useful advice to get a person feeling good again, it would sure be appreciated. Proper sleep and amino acids are HELPING my dopamine levels, they are making me feel BETTER, but I still don't feel like I should. I'm looking for "out of the box" answers to this question. Thank you.

Dopamine is a neuro transmitter. It used to be thought that too much of it in the synaptic clefts of the brain resulted in schizophrenia and too little of it resulted in parkinsonism. But this no longer believed. to quote a psychiatrist writing about psychopharmacology (1):

"In fact the more that is learned about neurotransmitters and psychopharmacology the more complex the picture grows: there are more kinds of neurotransmitters, more kinds of receptors, more interdependence. There are, as a recent textbook explains, no simple neurotransmitter-illness relationships." This was written in 2000; the situation today is even more cloudy.

Neuro-leptic and atypical antipsychotic drugs were (and still are) used to reduce the level of dopamine in the brain but, neuro-leptic drugs at least. often led to a parkinsonism like nerve damage known as Tardive Diskonesia.

It is dangerous to mess with the brain chemistry and taking L-tyrosine and L-tryptophan are probably not going to change brain chemistry one bit. Some tranquilizers have turned out to be addictive (benzodiazapines).

I want to refer you to another book written by a former writer for Scientific American Magazine. In it he as much as says "Science doesn't know s**t about the human brain." The book is "The undiscovered mind." by John Horgan (2).

My advice in order to get your life back in order is:
Stay off drugs and alcohol. Stay positive in your thinking. Find a non-drug pushing psychologist to talk to about any particularly difficult probelms you encounter (or even a good friend). Eat right, sleep right , exercise and in general maintain a healthy self-discipline.

I also have the same problems as you, being a former drug user. I have tried all the same things as you mentioned. Exercise definetly helped and a GNC product called GAMA

Serve others, quit thinking about how to make yourself feel good and help someone else feel well.
Surround yourself with some others that practice this giving philosophy.
