The stitches line will look like that for a few days. It's normal to have some fluid on it, but not blood dripping off. If you see that call the vet asap! The stitches will look like Frankenstein for a while, but they vanish into the fur in two weeks, the fur grows back completely in 2 months, and the hardness along the seam line will turn soft as the body reabsorbs the thickened skin that regrew there.

So what you describe is actually ok, as to the look of the incision. Don't worry about that unless you see actual bright red blood.

She won't want to lay uncomfortably, and is probably still coming out from the anesthetic which can take two days to wear off. DON'T pick her up, don't let her jump down from the bed, keep her on the floor if you can. She'll be uncomfortable for a while. Cats with anesthetic in their system won't want to drink (they know they'll throw up) and aren't hungry till the next day.

Pet her lightly so the skin doesn't pull. Talk to her quietly a lot. The only place she knows won't hurt right now is her face, so rub along the side of her jawline.

If the vet gave you pain medication (in liquid drops) then use it, but most cats who undergo a C-section are ok if they're not doing anything strenuous or jumping, or being picked up. Let her sleep a lot, she needs to heal and sleep is good for that.

She'll be feeling a lot better by day 3. You only just brought her home, so be calm and know that cats do heal very nicely from even major operations. She should eat maybe tomorrow afternoon and will probably start drinking about then too.

I know that you are feeling very scared, it is a horrible feeling when a beloved pet goes through an operation. Just remember, she has only had the op today and she will not feel like eating, drinking due to the anaeshtic. It may be a couple of days before she feels like eating. The reason why she will not sit down is she will be very sore. The best thing to do is just to leave her alone for a few days, if she comes to you then give her fuss and attention. As for the bleeding, I am sure if it is bleeding heavily your parents will call the vet, but sometimes there will be minor bleeding from the stitches, especially on the first day. Also, your cat will be feeling depressed, as she has just lost her babies, but she will soon come out of this. Do not worry, she has come through the worse part - the operation. And the vet would not have allowed her to come home if they thought she would be in any danger. If they thought she might die, or if there was any other bad problems they would have kept her in with 24hr care. So the fact that she is home means she is doing well. Try not to worry.

Also the first person to answer this question was so very cruel, please ignore them. They were completely out of order to say what they did to someone in your situation.

Hi Bubblehat,

Please do not think the worst. Your cat is going to be uncomfortable after her operation - she probably does not know what has happened to her, which is freaking her out a little. You've left her alone to settle and this was a very good thing to do. She will calm down.

Are your parents concerned about her too? Can you ask them to call the vet?

If not, why don't you call the vet yourself? Tell them that you are worried and that her stitches are bleeding and that she is not eating. They will be able to help you and reassure you, and also tell you what you can do to help your cat.

Try to be calm around her when you next see her. Just give her gentle fuss and strokes. She may not want to be touched much if she is feeling uncomfortable. Don't worry if this is the case - just go in to see her regularly and make sure she is ok. The vet has probably advised your parents to try to prevent her running around, jumping and going upstairs (if you have stairs). It might be worth making a comfy, quiet spot for her in her favourite room. Put her food, water and litter tray near to her so that she doesn't have to walk into another room to find them. Obviously don't put the litter tray too close, or she won't want to eat still.

My cat wouldn't eat much for a few days when we got a new kitten. Yours is a different situation because your cat is not very well, but one way of trying to get her to eat is to tempt her with very tasty foods - such as tuna in spring water, chicken, beef, or pate. You can actually buy pate made for cats; it's found near the special cat food tins such as Sheeba, in the supermarket. Pate got my cat eating again. Some people also say that baby food (from the little jars) is very tasty to cats and people do use it to tempt their cats to eat again.

Please, if you are worried, just call your vet and ask for some advice. They will talk to you over the phone for free.

Your cat is probably very woozy if it was under anesthetic. Mine was put under anesthetic when she was neutered and after she woke up she could just barely struggle to her bed and she didnt eat or drink anything for a few days but she was fine after a while.
Its the same with humans after being operated on and put under anesthetic she may be in a bit of pain around her stitches and she look as though she is drunk when she walks staggering all over the place and she will sleep alot as she is probably tired. If a there is a bit of dried blood around the stitches its ok but if their is alot of fresh blood coming out I would get her looked at by a vet.
The best thing you could do for her is to give her a very comfy and soft bed in a quiet corner in a warm room and let her sleep and move her food and water to beside her bed, occasionally try and give her a bit of water and food on a teaspoon if shes too lazy to get out of bed (she will be for a while)!!!
And don't worry she'l be fine and anyways cats can sense when their owners are stressed.

Sanguis you really are wicked.
Look at this way, your cat needed her operation and she has come through the worst of it. She'll be very sore & confused & needs to take it quietly and to be left alone (while you keep an eye on her of course) No animal has a big operation & bounces back straight away. The worst part about it is that you can do nothing but wait. I won't say - don't worry, she'll be OK because I don't know if it's true or not - but the chances are she is not going to die & in a few days time she'll be back to her old self
Don't let her see you are upset, that will only upset her too.

Don't listen to sanguis, that's just plain mean. If she's only had her option today, she's still wearing off the effect of general anesthesia. She's s'posed to be groggy and a bit restless, she could also have nausea so she won't want to eat or drink yet. You keep her warm and safe and watch over her and she should be much better tomorrow. If the bleeding gets worse, get your parents to call the vets. And please stop crying and worrying for now since the cat will pick up your restlesness. And good luck with her.

One more thing. Once all this has cleared it would be a good idea to get her spayed, to avoid the same thing happening again.

Since the opperation only happened two days ago her stitches probably hurt and she does not feel well. If she will let you get close to her try petting her in very calming ways, all the way down the back slowly calms my cats. If she gets hungry enough she should eat, but you might try enticing her with her favorite food, maybe some tuna or something, just till she gets better and back on her feet. I had a cat to gave birth to still borns, or they died later, I'm not sure. She brought them to us crying. Her sister had kittens very shortly after and this cat claimed them and helped raise them. It was very sweet. I know it sounds weird but if she's depressed at losing her kittens, you might look for a very young kitten to see if she'll adopt.

shes not getting worse love, she has had a serious operation which takes humans weeks to recover from. she is also showing post anaesthesia symptoms. just leave her quietly, or sit and stroke her...don't lift her up, as this will really hurt at the moment. she won't want food just now, but if you leave her water beside her, she can access it when she likes. cats don't usually tolerate milk, but put a small drop in a seperate dish, and dilute it with water for her, just for today. read up on the post op care sheet from the vet, and as long as there is no excessive swelling or bleeding from her wound she should have recovered a lot better in the next 24/48 hours. if you have any worries about her at all, just get your mum or dad to phone the vet. sorry about her kittens, it is sad, and sometimes it can happen. just sit beside her, and let her heal...she should be ok now....good luck.

SANGIUS....OR WHATEVER UR DAFT NAME IS........this is a child you are speaking to here, not the right way to educate someone is it.....SHUT IT !!!

First of all sanguis, she's a scared 13 year old, give her a break. Whether her cat is fixed or not is obviously not her decision, so get of your judgemental high horse and actually help or keep your opinions to yourself!

As for the cat, ask your parents, or call your vet. She could have an infection and need medication. I know after I had my c-section, I didn't feel much like being up and around for a few days! Think positive!

I am sorry that you are so upset and worried about your cat. It is hard to know how to advise you, but firstly your cat needs quiet and warmth. She is probably in some discomfort, but if you are worried telephone the vets who operated on her and seek their advice. (They should still be open at this time of the evening), and if necessary take her in immediately to see them. But do not let anyone pick her up or try to play with her etc.

Good luck, let us know how you and your cat get along.

I have just seen the answer from "sanguis", it is absolutely disgusting to communicate with an upset 13 year old in that fashion. There is no certainty whatsoever that the cat will die, they are always restless after major abdominal surgery. At least bubblehat cares enough to ask for help. I do not think sanguis is decent enough to be ashamed of herself, so I will be ashamed on her behalf!! Bubblehat do not take any notice of this answer. It is vindictive spiteful rubbish.

However I do agree with one point that was made - always try to spay and neuter your animals. There are too many unwanted ones around.
