I wanted something completely different but fun, so that way we don't have to cut up the cake or get so much paper plates and forks. I thought this up because we can make colorful frostings and have like 3 tiers on it. Do you think that's a great idea??

I think it's a cute idea!
There is so much you could do with it, too.

As you can tell it's a pretty popular idea! I've been to a bunch of weddings that used cupcakes instead of a regular cake. It's not a really original idea anymore because so many people do it now, but it's still a neat alternative to a cake.

I also went to a wedding recently that used pies instead of a cake! The bride can't eat cake for some reason so they got this metal tier thing and put a bunch of different types of pie on it. Great idea, I thought.

I love the idea of cupcakes formed into the shape of a cake. I think its a really great idea for a wedding. If you want to be different then thats the way to go. Bet you get a lot of compliments. I think it is great because it cuts down on time when guests are being served because they dont have to wait til the cake is cut. Then once they are served they have the option of eating it there or taking it home with them. I say do it....

I DID have cupcakes for our wedding cake. They were a big hit. We arranged them on a 2 tier cake plate and it looked fun but still classy. We saved on cake cutting fees and extra tableware. And they're ususally less expensive than a traditional wedding cake, providing you don't get carried away with decorating them.

Personally I'd stick to one or 2 colors with the frosting. Too much variation takes away from the elegance and can end up looking like a child's birthday party.

Yes, I think it's a wonderful idea...so wonderful I'm doing this myself, in fact. We're going to make a bunch of cupcakes, and arrange them in varying heights, and we're having a regular 2 tiered wedding cake on top of it all because I do want to cut the cake...I like the idea that the cupcakes can be many different flavors! Our main wedding cake is going to be orange cake with pineapple filling----I can't wait!

I think that is is a wonderful idea. There are many options you could do with that as well. I had a friend who had three seperate cakes for the guests and a fake cake for looks. They even went as far as to have a little section in the bckof the fakecaketo cut anddo the "traditional" cake feeding. It is your wedding and the possibilites are endless. People will have to do what you want becasue it is your big day and, basically, what you say goes! :)

I actually went to a wedding like that. It worked well, but you do lose the "cutting the cake" picture opp. I think it's a good idea though. At the wedding I went to they had the cupcakes on display on the cake table in the shape of a cake. They were chocolate cupcakes with strawberries on top. I thought it worked well.

That is an awesome idea. I plan on something similar. I am not going to have tiers of them, but I am going to have a cake for us to cut, not a big one just enough for a few people, then at each table there will be a tray of gourmet cupcakes.

I thought you wanted something "different". This is about 5 years old. Where have you been? Cool if the cake is also the dessert. A variation is to have cake pieces put into triangle gift boxes with colorful ribbons. Looks like a very fancy cake when organized in tiers and then the little boxes of cake, candies, whatever, become the give-aways as well.

I went to a wedding where they had a small wedding cake they could save for their first year and around the cake were cupcakes done very pretty with a plastic gold ring in each. Cute...

It's becoming more of an option, and I think it's cute. Would be nice to have them decorated with the colours you are having, and they can be different flavours.
I've seen a link on here before to a three tier cupcake holder - which looks really cool for presentation, but just on trays is just fine. Check your local rental places.
