The gift of prophet seems to have been a temporary gift given by the Christ for the laying of the foundation of the church. Prophets were foundational to the church (Ephesians 2:20). The prophet proclaimed a message from the Lord to the early believers. Sometimes a prophet’s message was revelatory (new revelation and truth from God) and sometimes a prophet’s message was predictive (see Acts 11:28 and 21:10). The early Christians did not have the complete Bible. Some early Christians did not have access to any of the books of the New Testament. The New Testament prophets “filled the gap” by proclaiming God’s message to the people who would not have access to it otherwise. The last book of the New Testament (Revelation) was not completed until late in the first century. So, the Lord sent prophets to proclaimed God’s Word to His people.

Are there true prophets today? If the purpose of a prophet was to reveal truth from God, why would we need prophets if we have the completed revelation from God in the Bible? If prophets were the “foundation” of the early church, are we still building the “foundation” today? Can God give someone a message to deliver to someone else? Absolutely! Does God reveal truth to someone in a supernatural way and enable that person to deliver that message to others? Absolutely! But is this the biblical gift of prophecy? No.

Whatever the case, whenever a person claims to be speaking for God (the essence of prophesy) the key is to compare what is said with what the Bible says. If God were to speak through a person today, it would be in 100% complete agreement with what God has already said in the Bible. God does not contradict Himself. 1 John 4:1 instructs us, “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21 declares, “Do not treat prophecies with contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good.” So, whether is it a “word from the Lord” or a supposed prophesy, our response should be the same. Compare what is said to what the Word of God says. If it contradicts the Bible, throw it out. If it agrees with the Bible, pray for wisdom and discernment as to how to apply the message (2 Timothy 3:16-17; James 1:5).

This is an interesting question, it's like asking if we know Jesus was who he was because he did 'miracles'. What if they were only 'magic tricks'? I mean, for instance, turning water into wine was a trick that magicians did in those days (and still do).

I'm not a Christian but I'm trying to answer this in a way that won't sound insulting to Christians, it isn't my intent to tell you you're wrong.

The NT says that there will be false prophets in the final days who will deceive people. The question is: Who will these false prophets deceive? Not atheists and agnostics who don't believe in prophets at all! They will deceive faithful Christians who want so badly to believe that they will not use their own judgement. They might even perform 'miracles'

God gave you 'critical faculties', the ability to evaluate the messenger based on the message. Jesus set the example, not just with his teachings but with his life. He didn't get rich and famous. He didn't conflate a political message with his religious one. He didn't blame all of man's problems on a scapegoat--a race or minority group or the poor or whatever. And most important, he didn't say one thing and do another, his actions matched his words.

If I was a Christian I would consider all these things in judging the validity of anyone's claim to be a prophet of God! If you have done your job as a faithful person, if you have studied and learned the real values of your faith, you will be well-equipped to tell the difference.

You already know, I'm sure,
that as the end times approach we are to expect both false prophets to show up, as well as, an increase in the power of the Holy Spirit over people's lives, bringing an increase of the prophetic word.

And you also remember,
that Christ warned us about the dangers we would meet up with in the end days.

Having said that,
I believe it is our own personal job as Christians to remind ourselves that Christ is the Redeemer and not anyone else. Not to feed into anyone's possible egotism or deception. To place our trusts and our hopes in the Lord and only in Him.
My church (catholic) teaches that while others may have personal revelation, even revelation that is sound teaching, NO ONE adds to the perfection of Christ or can add to the perfection of His Salvation.

The very fact that you pose the question would give me more than enough reason to walk away. I have always felt safer trusting the Holy Spirit speaking to my heart than any outward opinions.
Christ can be trusted, man can not.

God bless you. you're smarter than you think.

That's a really hard one since it says in the bible if everything Jesus did were written down, there would not be enough books to contain it. That's a really hard one because a person who receives a prophet in the name of the prophet receives a prophets reward. For good or bad I suppose.

I would be praying a lot and standing on the scripture in James "he gives wisdom to all without finding fault" and ask for wisdom. Also when God says if we ask for a fish we do not get a stone we can count on that also. Praying for truth keeps us safe. I'm not sure it's wise to discount things because they are not taught in church. Most churches don't even allow for miracles or really prepare spiritually for them to happen. :)

The bible warns us about false prophets, I would be causious, and reserve my opinion until I searched further into his life, You can always put what this man says to the test... Does it agree with what the bible says? It could be that you went to a church that distorted a couple of thing and didn't teach from the bible. If you question him or even think what he says has a thread of untruth, you must seek the word of god for the answer.

I personally would question ANY one who claims to be a PROPHET especially one for the "end times". Don't misunderstand me, I believe that the prohetise are true and near, but we are not to be lead astray by these "false prophets"

God Bless.

I don't think there are any Prophets alive today.

Yes the scriptures tell us that our young men will prophesy ... visions will be given...

Remember, even Satan's demons and prophets will emulate God and Jesus. Not all who are claiming these "miracles" are truly of God.

When someone tells me they are a Prophet or Prophetess I walk away from them.

In order for it to be a true healing... did the person get checked by a doctor or two? Just because they heal ...does not mean they are from God. Remember that!!!!

Don't let ANY man deceive you!!!!

Skeptic here. Though I am Christian.

I don't take the Book of Revelation as literal, so the whole "end time" thing, for me, is a little sketchy.

If said prophet made some kind of show of it... i.e. tele-evangelist style... then all bets are off. I won't accept a performer as a prophet.

Good luck

Dear Me,

The Bible is the law book of God. If this man were saying that he was receiving "messages" (visions, voices) from God, I would know very quickly that he is a false prophet... Revelation 22:18, 19 states, "For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book."

God is not adding ANYTHING to His word. It is complete! This is why we know that the "tongues movement" is of satan.

Secondly, Christ did not come to earth to heal physical diseases! He came to earth to be the sin offering or sacrifice to pay the sin penalty for all those whom God chose to salvation (Ephesians 1:3-5). Christ had to endure the equivalent of spending eternity in hell for each of those whom He came to save! The whipping with the cat'o nine tails and nailing to the cross did not pay for 1 sin. It was we could not see-God pouring out His wrath on the Lord Jesus-that paid the sin penalty. The Bible tells us that "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:" (Galatians 3:13). Christ became a curse for all those whom He came to save--check out Deuteronomy 28).

It does not take a genius to know that there is something wrong with the churches. God gave us just ONE (1) Bible. This means, at best, that 1 of all the churches (denominations) has the truth or, at worst, none of them do. That is why we are instructed to read and study God's word because pastors, priests, and preachers make errors.

Here's a thought, why not wait until something like this happens? When it does, check out the alleged healing(s) very carefully. 999 times out of 998 it will be a total and complete fake.

Your question really leaves me hanging. What are the "deeper" meanings by Christ? Where do I find them?

You thought it important enough to ask about, so why do you keep it a secret?
