There are a myriad different types of meditation, so you need to choose one and follow it. It's best to have some guide about what to expect, but unfortunately, I've found this to be lacking in my travels.

One of the effects of meditation is that it brings up images from the subconscious. There are certain forms of meditation that consist of observing what comes up--without getting absorbed in the thought or imagery itself. Eventually, the images and thoughts become less or feel "distant" but this only occurs after a very long time.

You may go through a period, early on, when images, scenes, people, and inner voices or messages occur or recur. Rather than regard these things as supernatural or otherwise otherworldly occurrences, it is best to regard them as projections of your own mind and to passively witness them and even perhaps gain some insight about yourself in this way. Or, if you need to think of them as coming from a "spirit guide" or "God" or whatever, it is best to hold both thoughts in your mind--they are from some entity but they also are projections of mind.

In time, the images will change, the mind should quiet or become focused on a single, selected thought or mood in meditation.
