I know that in CA, every cat and dog aged 4 months or over have to get their rabbies shot.
anyway it does not mean people do it.....

but is it the same everywhere? do pet owners have to give rabbies shot in every State? or is it a state by state thing?
please provide source if possible

contact your city hall, but be aware of this: many animals have lasting negative affects from rabies shots. One rabies shot generally provides immunity for nearly ten years, but the state makes us do it once a year. Now there is a every three year vaccine, but this is still too much. Cats are especially sensitive, some have died from the shot! Some states will take a test to see if the animal still has antibodies, and this is accepted in place of a booster shot. Be mindful of this. Rabies is practically unheard of in pets in the western world. The last case of a pet having rabies was over 50 years ago. My pit bull has her shot, and a cat (indoor) that I adopted has his, but my other indoor cat does not. Use your own judgement after you research both sides!

All dogs have to be vaccinated for rabies anywhere in the US and if you don't they will attempt to find the pet and it's owner. The state keeps up with every animal through a number (found on the tag on the collar and on the documentation) and if the vaccination comes past due, they will take action. This actually happens quite often as sometimes people do try to evade it, but more commonly after a pet dies and doesn't inform their veterinarian, and the notices come in the mail but are just thrown away. Then one day animal control shows up for the pet.

I know in New York where I use to live it was a state law and now I'm in Virginia and it is still a law unfortunatley many don't and there have been several cases of rabies in domestic pets in my semi local area. i also know that rabies once again is spreading and fairly fast so if it isn't a law it should be.
the one thing that gets me though is the way many vets charge more for the "3 year" vaccine but for those who don't know it it's the same exact vaccine it's just suggested you give it 1 year later for teh 2nd time as a booster then go to every 3 years.

Yes, every state. I don't know how much you know about rabies but there are only 6 recorded survivors of Rabies (human). It isn't a disease that anyone wants to even be exposed to. Odds are just not good that you would live.

In response to the person that said it wasn't required in Hawaii, it was when I lived there because there is no Rabies in the state and they certianly don't want any.

In most states yes it is the law that your pets have a rabies vaccine.
In Nebraska and Iowa it is a law.
They must be given by a licensed vet for the shot to be considered valid.
Horses and livestock can be done by the owner and are not required to have the shot

No, not all states require the rabies vaccine: www.zbirdbrain.com/VAX/RabiesLaws.pdf

Hawaii, South Dakota, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Ohio, Wyoming, and Utah are the states that don't require it at the state law, but some of these states have it required by county. Most of the other states require it for both cats and dogs, but not all of the other states require it for cats.

No it isn't mandatory in every state. I live in Texas and we are not required to have rabies shot. Though I do think it should be mandatory. Both of my pets have had their rabie shot, and get them every year. It is just better and healthier for your pet.

No, in Hawaii if you have an animal born there they are not required rabies as there is no rabies there. If you bring an animal there you must have your animals up to date on there shots and have a blood test done to show your animal does not have rabies. Most mainland states require rabies.

most communities in all states require you to have a dog license. in order to get one you need a rabies shot certificate by a vet. so yes it is mandatory in all states, just not in all communities. (although it should be)
