i think they say that because we think we should wear darker colors during the winter months. when you think of the winter months you think of browns and reds or dark blue just like the spring you think of a lot of happy colors. but when you live in Texas and it does not get that cold i feel like you can wear white year around.

It was an unwritten rule. White is a spring color. Labor day means the begining of fall and winter. So your not supposed to wear Spring and Summer colors durring the fall or Winter. Vice a Versa.

It is a peculiar 'rule' isn't it? Well, I am not sure. I remember this rule, too. We put away our white shoes and blouses in favor of the darker fall colors.
This is just my opinion, fall brings cooler weather and darker clothes. In the north where I live, the temps will soon start to fall off -- by the end of this month, the high temps will be in the mid to low 60s. So, the darker and heavier clothes come out.
But, if you live in the west or the south where the temps stay warmer longer- be bold! Keep wearing those white clothes! Besides, what's going to happen to you?

It's no longer a rule as there are fall and winter whites. It is really no different than no longer wearing your summer linens in the fall even if they are brown. White is such a summery "color" when done in light cottons, chintzes and linens so it stands out even more. To that end, lightweight summer fabrics get put away regardless of their color and the fall and winter fabrics appear. It's not rocket science.

I guess that it came from the same era that "spring cleaning" did...when most people used coal to heat their homes, which causes to sooty residue everywhere necessitating the deep clean once the weather warmed up. I think the idea of not wearing white after summer is over fits in with that idea. What do you think?

It's back in the day when moms wore pearls and babysat their husbands, some old biddy decide it was proper etiquette to not wear white.
