Sports theme (baseball, football, basketball & hockey all in season). Do a tail-gate type party. Wings, burgers, hotdogs, beer keg, chips, veggies & dip, nachos, etc.

why beat it? if he loved it, just do it again. bring back some of the things he loved and create new scary foods... add some different decorations and make it a tradition.

What time of the year is his birthday?

If it's still hot out you can get one of those plastic baby pools, wash it out and fill it with margarita's, you can have a margarita pool party.
