My dads was nicked and found 2 weeks later. It came back covered in finger print dust. So I guess they check for prints and get it back in a few days. Never found the thieves though, but was found in a container on its way to africa...

The police will have the vehicle recovered for a forensic examination. This is usually to the recovery agents drying room, where it can be examined later (in daylight). The examination will be carried out by a SOCO (Scenes of Crime Officer - mostly civillianised). This is generally a sweep through the car to gain any evidence as to identify the person or persons who stole the car.
This will include a fingerprint exam of the obvious surfaces, possibly seat tapings to obtain fibres (usually only collected when a suspect has been arrested), and a DNA sweep to look for any article left that may yield a DNA profile.
Once the exam is completed the vehicle can be released back to the owner / insurance company.

In the UK the vehicle will be recovered for forensics, it will be taken to a police compound where fingerprinting and any fibers will be seized, however this is not done by police officers but forensic civilian staff, once that is done it will be released for the insurance company or the owner to be collected while any evidence such as fingerprints or hair fibers are sent off to be checked against the national database for a offender ident.

some officers will talk to people in the area and see if anyone knows anything about when the car arrived, who drove it, etc.
dust the vehicle for fingerprint latent evidence, do a search of the interior of the vehicle for any contraband or possible evidence, contact the owner to come pick up the vehicle if it can be driven, if owner is not available call for a tow and impound the vehicle, submit the latent card to crime lab for analysis, submit a supplemental report (for the recovery) using the original case number. go 10-8 and on to the next call.

My car was stolen and the Police did find it. They just told me they had found it and where it was located. It was up to me to recover it and it was found over 400 miles from where I live. I had to travel to Scotland for it and hope I was able to drive it back home. Fortunately it was okay.

I believe they will run the plates and see who it belongs to. they will tow it to the police impound yard and charge a small fortune to the owner to get it released.

They'll print it and run them to see if they match any in the data base. But it will get returned after the investigation is over.

Well you report it to the Police, who log it, and then after a week without no knowledge of what they have done, you go see them and they tell you its in their pound, " Did you not get a phone call " they ask...No ! Well I will show you where it is and you can take it. They are not really interested in you or the car.

It all depends if there are suspects in the incident. Here in my city, the car will only be held if there are suspects.
