Hi mom! The only way to overcome this is to drive! I have panic attacks and I was afraid to drive for a while, until I realized that in order to get through it, I had to force myself behind the wheel.
I understand your problem all to well. There are MANY people who can't do "simple" tasks for some kind of fear.
Start off slow. Go down your block a few times at first. Then go around one block, and so on until you are ready for the main roads. You will be terrified at first, but be strong and you will get through this, IF you try!
You can do it! You will be so proud of yourself when you do it! I was! I still get nervous here and there, but I push myself through it! Think of happy thoughts to keep your mind from getting to overwhelmed....

You need to get back on that horse...
More than just an adage, the only way you'll get over this dread is to confront it. Start driving after rush hours on small trips even if it's just around the block and gradually increase your time and distance. Put on some light soothing music and GO FOR IT! If you would like to be driving before your oldest daughter then do so.

When I was sixteen I was in a bad car accident with my friends. I would not could not drive a car. When I was nineteen, i was in college and needed to drive. It was so hard at first, i had Anxiety attacks just sitting in the car. i did it a little at a time. i still feel that dread as you call it to this day. it will get easier you just have too try. You just have to get out there. Drive for short periods of time.
Try it! it will get easier and easier and then make your drives longer and longer. Try driving around the block at first until you feel comfortable.

You're letting yourself be controlled by the other drivers. You need to train yourself to always watch out for other drivers in any situation keep your eyes all around you. Example if your coming to an intersection where you have a green light, and the others have a red light, still look to see if there are cars coming and if they are slowing down. You know people run red lights, it happens, but most people dont think to look for oncoming cars if they have a green light. You could prevent accidents yourself even if its the other drivers fault. It'll give you more sense of control if you know that accidents are preventable in lots of situations and to watch out for them. Of course there is always a chance of an accident and you just like everyother drive has to accept that. If you cant talk yourself out of it, then you should talk to a therapist about the fear.

You are not the only one like this I know 2 people that are afraid to drive. And don't if is your personal decision, Forcing a person to drive under those circumstances is a bad and dangerous scenario.

The only way to get over your fear of driving is to get professional help. The therapy will allow you to get past your accident and to stop thinking it will happen again if you drive a car.

The obvious answer is to seek professional help. What started out as a concern has become a full blown neurosis. YOu need to find someone to whom y ou can talk, get insight and learn to work around your phobia. Do it soon and you'll be driving in no time.

(.net.nz/~shaneris) and find a therapist proficient in the use of this technique. Then do a course in defensive driving, and teach your children this.
