The best tea you can possibly make takes a lot of consideration. Here are the most basic steps:

-Wash out the kettle completely, then fill it up with cold filtered water. Always use fresh water.

-Bring the water to a COMPLETE boil. Use a kettle that either automatically shuts off or one that whistles when it comes to a boil so you know that it's a full boil.

-While the water is boiling, set up the tea. If you're using loose tea, use about one teaspoon for every cup. With bagged tea, obviously use only one bag per cup. If you like sugar in your tea, add it now (only if you're using cups and not a pot). I usually take 2 flat teaspoons, but many people find this too sweet. It's up to you, but remember adding sugar is always easier than taking it out later!

If you're using a teapot, make sure you fill it with only as much water as you need. If you're only making it for two people, you won't need to fill it all the way to the top. A good way to measure this is to fill two teacups with water and pour them into the pot to see approximately how much water is needed. After a while you'll be able to just eyeball it. Nothing else should go in the pot besides the tea leaves/bags and water. Sugar belongs either in the cups or in a separate container.

-Once the water has boiled, immediately pour it and let it steep for 3-5 minutes. Don't let it steep too long or it will taste bitter.

-Take the bags out and add some whole fat milk if you like.

As for what you eat with tea, that's entirely up to you. I'm a big fan of scones, but to be honest, I just like having tea by itself.

Proper English tea is NEVER, EVER served with lemon. Just milk. You can sweeten it with sugar if you want, but I think it is better without.

Do not use "speciality" teas like Earl Grey..hardly anyone drinks that in England. The closest type of tea to a standard
English type is usually referred to outside England as "breakfast blend". In England, it is drunk at any time, not just breakfast.

Most important..you must allow the tea time to brew in the hot water. This means leaving it for at least five minutes. Otherwise it will be very weak. and taste of nothing. The English like their day-to-day ordinary tea strong.

Biscuits are unnecessary..but if you must have some, use very dry English biscuits, such as Rich Tea or Digestives. Do not use biscotti or anything that would be normally used with coffee in Italy.

If you bought the tea in Italy, chances are it will be some poncey stuff like Earl Grey, which tastes like dish-water. You need to get good English tea (Yorkshire), and the real stuff does not come in bags. Put a heap teaspoon in a warm teapot and brew for at least 3 mins. Pour into a cup which has a little milk using a strainer to strain the tea leaves. Add sugar to taste. Serve with hot scones, strawberry jam and clotted cream, or rich tea biscuits.
P.S. Just read some of the answers that tell you to add milk to tea. Wrong! Twinnings, and many tea experts will tell you to pour tea into the milk. But recent research suggest that milk robs tea of its health benefits. For a healthy brew, drink it black, but for taste, use some milk, unless it's Chinese tea.

HELLO Claudia,
There are so many English Teas out there it's quite difficult, shall you be using a tea pot with Tea leaves (loose from the packet) or is your tea in bags?
If you are using leaves and a tea pot - With boiling water add some to the pot, throw it away, boil the water again and to your pot add one teaspoon of leaves to each person, the more you use the stronger the tea, add the boiling water stir, let it stand for a few minutes, pour using a tea strainer into the cup add milk & sugar to your taste. However if you are using tea bags we usually place one bag per person into a mug add the boiling water milk & sugar as you like it. Keep trying it's good.

To make it properly, you have to make tea from loose leaves in a pot. Boil water and put it in the pot to warm the pot. Then pour off the water and place the tea leaves into the pot (the amount is based on your taste) and add more boiling water. Let it steep for 3-5 minutes and then strain the tea into cups. I prefer a teaspoon of sugar and skim milk, as I do not like too much creaminess in my tea.

Serce with scones, tea bicuits, maybe even toast with jelly.

Hello Claudia,

I buy tea from the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. I sit back and enjoying sipping the tea while reading the newspaper. I don't put milk/sugar/honey I like it plain.

That is how I drink the tea.

Use water fresh from the tap and when boiling pour it straight onto the tea. Leave for approx 2 mins then take out the tea bag (or strain if it's leaf tea). Add milk and sugar if required.

Good luck!

Did you buy Tea Bags or Leaf Tea?

If you bought Leaf Tea, you need to use a pot to brew it, you usually put 1 or 2 teas spoons of leaf tea per cup you want to make, and as my granny always said, plus one for the pot... so that means for 2 cups of tea, use 5 teaspoons or about 25grammes of tea.
If you bought Tea Bags, you Can put 1 Tea bag per cup of tea you want to make, so if you want 2 cups you use 2 bags.

Brewing times, the longer you leave it the stronger the infusion. about 3 or 4 minutes is long enough when brewing in a pot, 2 or 3 minutes if your brewing in the cup as most people make it now.

If you make your tea with lose leaf tea then you will need a sieve to capture the loose tea leaves as you pour your drink.

Milk and sugar are added to your personal taste.

If your looking for an a cup of tea like what you had in England, it is very likely that you had what is called "Breakfast Tea" which is a strong blend of teas that suits most tastes.

People will argue over what makes tea taste best, whilst theirs no actual difference, most people argue it tastes better when drink from bone china, IMHO that just snobbery as bone china cups are pricey, a common or garden mug will do just as well.

Before pouring, remember to stir the pot...

Remember, like Coffee, Tea contains about the same caffeine as coffee...

First start with cold, great tasting, water. If your tap water does not taste good, then use filtered or bottled water. (I say to use cold water because a typical hot water heater will often add contaminants and reduce the amount of oxygen in the water, which is needed for flavor extraction).

Then bring the desired amount of water to a rolling boil. (Do not boil the water for a long period of time because this too will deplete the water of oxygen).

Put approximately 2 grams or 1 tsp. of tea leaves per 6-8 oz. of water into a pre-heated pot or cup (pre-heating will allow the tea to steep at the proper temperature).

Then add hot water Please note that these are general guidelines. If your tea container has brewing instructions I would follow those as they are probably ideal for that specific tea.

Allow to steep or sit for about 4 to 6 mins. Pour, add sugar and cream, enjoy......Google it too for different ideas. Add one measure for each cup and one extra for the pot......if you are using a pot.

The important thing is that before making , it's better to wash it up with cold water in order to remove the dust . then add the boiling water and put it on an indirect flame ( It's better to put it on a hot water bath ) at least for 15 - 20 min . Now it's ready to Drink , enjoy your tea !
