The first couple of Popes were Jews, we got two Poles, Benny is a German and the rest were Italian? It makes sense the Bishop of Rome has been mainly Italians, it doesn't make sense for the Universial Bishop to be mainly Italians.

What do you mean that it does not make sense? God chooses our popes through the Cardinals. And the first pope was a catholic Jew. His blood was Jewish but his faith was catholic, What do you think, that the cardinals should take more than all the time they already have to take out of their busy sheudule to find a pope, to find a pope that's nationality has not been chosen already? Imagine if they did that what chaos there would be in the church! No, we are happy with the popes God chooses for us.
p.s. btw stanely the scribe, it is not a contest. come on...
God bless

That's the problem with the Catholic Church today. The European dominated College of Cardinals are too Eurocentric and arrogant to allow a non-European to become pope. The Catholic Church is supposed to be a multicultural, universal church of many nations and not some European institution. I was actually quite disappointed when Benny was elected - I was hoping for a South American cardinal like Bergoglio to become pope, because logically, since the centre of Catholicism is shifting to Third World countries then we should stop having European, Western dominated popes.

PS: Rumour has it that Cardinal Bergoglio was the main challenger to Benny during the last conclave. So South America still has a chance. I'm betting on the Honduran Cardinal Maradiaga (who has Italian descent) to be Benny's successor.

Catholics believe that the Bishop of Rome, the Pope, is selected under the inspiration and guidance of the Holy Spirit. This does not mean that the man selected is the holiest available, but that he is the right person to lead the Church for that time. National origin is not a consideration.

Because for a very long time, the Papal heirarchy was centered on the Vatican City - those closest to the Pope, tended to be the next Pope.
