I would get rid of the boyfriend before I got rid of the babies. But my suggestion for trying to make peace is to clean clean clean. Clean everything really well, including the cats, and keep your house extremely clean. Vacume everyday including furniture and change bedding weekly. Also you can get an air purifyer for each room they work really well.

Whatever you do, DO NOT GIVE UP YOUR CAT. You will SORELY regret this if you and your boyfriend ever break up, and to suggest that it's either 'him or the cat' is DISGUSTING. That is implying that it is okay to chose your boyfriend, when you are all your cat has. You took the cat on as a lifelong responsibility, and remember if you surrender him/her to a shelter, it will mostly be euthanized. That being said, it depends on how bad the allergies are. If they're absolutely awful and undoable, then you should maybe just not live together for the time being. If they are bearable but just really are a pain in the butt, then there are various types of medications he can take to dull the allergies. Also, giving your cat a bath every week really helps cut down on dander and allergens, I found that works a lot with my cat because my father is allergic (I have not lived at home for awhile, but I sometimes bring her with me when I visit). I would call a vet or a doctor/pharmacist and ask what the most popular solutions have been, and find out your options. Good luck!

Scientists have proven that when a person is allergic to something, it's a *protein* connected with that something that is the culprit. Therefore, it's not the cat's fur or dander that is at fault here, but a protein in the cat's saliva, which naturally gets all over the fur when he grooms himself. It's been shown that if a cat is wiped down with a wet (but not wringing wet) washcloth every few days, allergy symptoms are greatly reduced. Perhaps the two of you can take turns doing it; that way, no one feels obligated in any way.

If you get rid of the cats, and then you break up w/BF you'll be doubly sad!! Unless you're lazy or slobby, I'd try ALL of the cleaning suggestions and the Claritin idea first. My vacuum is my best house buddy when there's a pet. Anytime there's an animal in the house you gotta Clean, Clean, Clean! B/C my cat likes my queen size bed I have to vacuum it every other day (just the top), if I don't lock her out of my room. If your cleaning skills aren't too good, go to the library & get a video on how to clean---they're out there!!

He should start desenitization shots with an allergist and in the meantime get Claritin and/or prescription allergy medicine (I'm really sensitive and the good stuff doesn't knock me out). Your kitties need to stay off furniture and the bed and will need to be bathed frequently to reduce cat dander. You should also vacuum daily.

Hopefully all this will help. Otherwise, your BF and the cats are just not compatible.

I do not know how you can completely eliminate the problem, however, buying a powerful air filter can reduce allergens, and certain types of (cat) food can also aid in the problem. In addition, clean your vents as often as possible. In the event that you must find your cats a new home, hairless cats (sphynx) are another feline option, if you dont mind the appearance or the indoor only nature of them.

My first thought is to get rid of the boyfriend, because it will never work. But secondly, if you wash the cat on say a weekly basis (even if it's a spongebath), you will get rid of the saliva on the fur that is the real culprit. My friend is allergic to cats and this totally works for her.

I used to be allergic, so did my girlfriend. Not sure if it works for everyone, but I believe you can beat your allergies.

What I did is I used to wash my hands well after playing with the cats, and would take ONE claritin-D (non-drowsy) a day, after a week and a half, I got over it.

Might take less or longer for your boyfriend, but give it a shot.

Send your lovely cats away to live with someone else for the rest of your lives. If you are not willing to do this, he is the wrong guy.

Suggestions on who might take them? I would suggest youth in Asia.
