I know its slang for like diarrhea, and abdominal distress, excessive gas etc. but never heard it from a Dr.
Call your Drs. office and ask the nurse to look up his diagnosis and explain it to you.
Some Drs. try to not use big medical terms so normal people can understand, but at least if you had the proper name you could look it up online and research.
Good-Luck
hope your grandson feels better soon

Could he have meant that your grandson has a leaky gut? Leaky gut syndrome sounds serious but many people have it and it can corrected or reversed with eating changes. It happens when waste moves out of the bowel walls into the rest of the body, where the waste does not belong. The condition can be treated with a change in dietary habits. Your grandson could be sensitive to gluten or other foods which is causing the condition.

I've never heard of gut rot, but old country doctors sometimes call stomach problems rot gut. It usually refers to kids who eat alot of un-wholesome foods like chips, candy, sodas, etc.. You could always try calling the doctors office and ask him what he/she meant. They might not be able to divulge the exact problem(doctor/patient confidentiality) but will give you a better idea. Rotgut is also a term for cheap liquor or anything that will sour your stomach.

To me, gut rot is an undefined strong liquor, probably inexpertly made at home. I cannot believe that the doctor would not have been more direct in that case, so I assume that he means some undefined malady which did not require his attention.

All i know is when i was a child (Many, many, moons ago) if we had an upset stomach we used to call it gut rot.The connection been instead of saying my guts feel rotten been children we twisted it round, for easiness.Don't know if this helps though.

I can't imagine a doctor using this phrase as a professional, medical diagnosis. That's pretty bad practice and I would certainly ring back the surgery and ask the practice manager to explain to you exactly what he means by it.
*probably just an upset stomach, and if so, that's precisely what he should've said.
