I have British and Australian pen pals, and they make simply grammar and spelling mistakes. Is making grammar and spelling mistakes common amongst the British and Australian. I think it is unusual inasmuch as English is their mother tongue.

English is our mother tongue too, my dear! I believe you have made a "simply grammar" mistake of your own in your above question, have you not? Don't be such a critic! I know lots of people who slaughter their own languages! Surely a smart girl like yourself can be a little forgiving of a few errors in spelling in a personal letter---YEESH!

No, the British and Australians can spell just as well as Americans can (assuming you're American).

Assuming these 'mistakes' are things like 'colour' and 'favourite' and so on instead of 'color' and 'favorite', then they are not mistakes. Australia used to be part of the British Empire, and is part of the Commonwealth - so they use the same English as we British do. They spell the same, in other words. It's called British English - though Australian English is close to, if not the same as, British English.

You cannot say that the British and Australians have bad spelling and grammar, JUST by looking at two people. Look at each of the two nations as a whole, you'll find that our literacy is just as good as that of any other developed country. .. That includes America.

There are many words that are spelled differently in British English and American English. Examples include tyre/tire, colour/color, honour/honor, and so on. So, what seems to be a spelling error to you is *not* a spelling error to your penpals.

It's not common, it depends on one of few factors, such as age, maturity, and the ability to spell correctly.
