To hold Flag Rank, that is be a general officer you will require a BS in order to start on your career path and before you're done you'll most likely have to obtain a masters degree. All generals (admirals) start off life as a 2nd lieutenant (ensign) and work their way up the commissioned ranks, the trick is being an exceptional Colonel prior to your eighteen year of service and that they recognize it so your name is placed before the President for consideration. The President will nominate you among a list of other qualified officers, Congress will approve you and you got a star.

Don't make any mistakes along the way, one black bordered letter and you can just forget that star.

Normally to be able to serve long enough as an officer to get promoted to General you'd have to come in as an officer, meaning you'd need a degree. Most of the officers that get commissioned through the Limited Duty Officer program, which doesn't require a degree, will retire as an O-3, and some will make it to O-4, but I haven't heard of any staying in long enough to reach O-7, doesn't mean it didn't happen, just haven't heard of it.

first, get a 4 year degree and be accepted into the Officer community of whatever Branch you chose( Hint..Navy and Coast Guard doesn't have generals)

Then progress up through the ranks. takes about 20 years to become a General, and you can't just limp along half assedly. You actually must be GOOD at what you do.

You don't need to waste time and money going to college in order to be a General. Everyone on Yahoo! Answers is an arm-chair General and the great thing about this is that you don't need to know a whole lot about military matters to post here. Just read a few books, a newspaper article or two and watch some old war movies and you'll be an expert uniquely qualified to post on Yahoo! Answers. Whats more, people will take your answers seriously and there is less chance of being sent to Iraq and mortared or shot at.

Yes you do and Military Academy is collage. Just some advice most general officers are graduates of of one of the major Military Academy's such as West point, naval Academy, VMI. West Point and the Naval Academy are free but it takes a lot of prep work to get in to either. They are free with a Military commitment.

Yes, its a pre-req for even being an officer. You are setting your goals up high arent you? Maybe you should try being in the military before you aspire to becoming a General (a lifetime commitment, it takes around 30 years or so to become a General)

Good luck. You almost have to be an academy graduate. Most have Masters degrees. Most are politicians. Most are connected (few "outsiders" obtain the rank). You have to be confirmed by Congress.
