The Mar Iguana was discovered by Charles Darwin on his expedition to the Galapagos Islands in the late 1700s (1798?).

It is the only sea dwelling iguana, and can swim underwater, and hold its breath for long periods of time.

The great Portuguayan explorer J. R. "Bob" Dobbs, who was looking for a new route to the Spice Islands of the West Indies when he ran aground on a previously uncharted peninsula in the Indian Ocean in 1843. He named it Mariguana after the then-Queen Mother of Portuguay, Mari-Inhaste, and claimed it in her name. Boy was his face red, though, when he found out later that he had actually gone ashore somewhere on the coast of Nepal, and his maps were all screwed up. Still, the name has stuck to this very day!
