I believe each marathon has their own rules. I know the Twin Cities marathon doesn't allow it.

There are certain marathons that will not allow you to wear walkmans at all. I have run over 30 marathons with a personal best of 3:19 in which I had a walkman with me.
Check the races entry forms.
For track and field not such a good idea.

U can't use any music devices in track and field because of the possibility of it falling or dropping and interfering with the other runners. It might interfere with your run 2. Where as in marathons it is much less informal and you aren't trying for scholarships.

I think most marathons don't "allow" Mp3 players, IPOD's, etc....but people do anyway. Basically, it's not enforced. I'm running a half marathon next week and e-mailed to ask if I could bring mine. I was told that they are not allowed on the course but I'll see half the people there wearing them anyway.

It is becoming more common that races prohibit runners to wear head sets and listen to music while racing.
Track and field rules do not allow any electronic devices on the track or around it. If an athlete is using a device they can be disqualified.

I think its retarded. I can run like 30 seconds faster on my overall mile time if I'm listening to music and yet the track meets don't allow it. My fastest mile imes were ran listening to music

idk about marathons as i'm only 15, but why would you want to carry one? isn't your clothes enough of a burden for 26.2 miles? and about track and cross country, no, you can't. i don't really like running with an ipod anyway, so it doesn't bother me.
