I'm going to check with my vet when they open, but I figured I'd throw the question out too.

Yes - the frontline dose for a dog that is 5 pounds would be the smallest size of the frontline dose which is 0-22 pounds (this dose if for puppies too) totally safe! If your dog were over 22 pounds , you would do the next dosing which would be 22-44 pounds (of course your little guy(girl) will never make it that heavy ( or shouldn't anyway!) Just remember - no bath 2 days before you apply the frontline or 2 days after you apply the frontline. It needs time to absorb into the skin.

Yes, it will be fine. If you're really worried, half the dose should cover her just fine, but there wouldn't be a good way to store the extra half. You could also discuss other products with your vet. I find that frontline works best for my needs, but Adavantage/Advantix/Revolution all come in smaller doses (1-10, even 5-10 lb). Advantage does the least as far coverage, but is also generally less expensive. If you don't have ticks around, it should be fine. Revolution is probably the most expensive, but it does the most. However, some vets are still resistant to topical heartworm medication.
Those are options if you want a smaller dosage range. The frontline will be just fine, but if another one makes you more comfortable, try it.

Yes, that is fine and is a common question (I work at Petco and hear it all the time). Even for those who are still worried, you can put half of the dose instead of the whole thing. However, that really isn't necessary because the dosage is for dogs up to 22 pounds. Just don't give if you dog is less than 8 weeks old.

I just got a tiny tiny mini dachshund about a week ago. She is 7 weeks old and weights 2.5 lbs. The vet gave her the OK for Frontline. They used the 0 - 22 lb. size. We did this on Fri. and haven't seen a flea since. She didn't have any reaction whatsoever. My little champ!

Hope this helped!

You should be ok. The frontline medicine has a large range in dosage. For example, I give my 30 pound beagle a dose for 25-50 pound dogs and she manages just fine. But call your vet and check if you're nervous.

Good luck!

my vet told me to use half a dose on my 3 lb Pomeranian of the 0 - 22 lb dosage....it worked just as well she didn't have a flea problem and it eliminated the possibility of a reaction cause she was so small....

well seems how your dogs weight is within the weight guidelines for the dose, then it should be alright. i wouldn't half the dose though. it says 0 to 22 lbs then any dog within those weights should have a whole pill

My 5 lb. pom & my chihuahua usually split one dose and it lasts all month. But I have given them a full dose before and there were no problems. Your vet should be able to put your mind at ease, but I would guess it'd be OK.

**WTF is the thumbs down for???? *******.

I have a seven pound Chihuahua and I usually use half. It doesn't seem to bother her. BUT, I would call a VET just to be safe.
