I work for a small company...I have a bachelors and my boss (the owner) does not have a college degree. His girlfriends mother died and left her the house, so he sold his house and they had extra money, so he bought a franchise with it...
Anyway, the other week he wrote me an email saying:
"Write the words "FOR YOU" on the post it that I put on the table in the corner".
I can't stop thinking about it and I get soooo angry. Right now I'm foaming at the mouth.
Do you consider that degrading and just wrong?!!!???

He also once typed a letter he wanted to send to a client...then printed it out...and gave it to me to type up.
He couldn't have emailed me what he typed? He is soooo lazy!!!!!

sometimes it's not what people ask for, it's how they ask for it. I agree that his way of making requests may not be ideal, BUT getting quite so angry in not productive, and while sort of dense, it's hardly rude and crude. College is a great experience, and perhaps he did "fall" into a financial windfall, but that hardly makes you brilliant and him stupid- I think you're just over reacting. Either develop a thicker skin or look for a new job.

Are you the administrative assistant or private secretary, or are your duties as such regardless of title? If so, he has every right to ask you to do these things even if they are annoying little tasks. Unfortunately, degree or no, he's the boss. And what he's asked you to do would be in your realm of duties (if being his assistant or equivalent is indeed what your job). It doesn't sound to me so much as degrading as it is just plain annoying. Degrading would be picking up his dry cleaning, making his coffee, running other personal errands or doing personal work for him (if you are not his personal assistant). Bosses like this can be severely annoying and frustrating. But you have to take the annoying tasks along with the good ones -- it's like that everywhere, in any job.
And as a general rule of thinking, just because someone has a degree doesn't necessarily make them better in business than someone who does not. Obviously he has been successful. There are many small business (and larger ones) that do extremely well under the guidance of a degree-less leader who happens to have terrific business sense and experience.

No, degrading is being asked to sit next to the 80 year old owner's desk and read a sex Q&A column (real incident).
What does his girlfriend and selling his house have to do you? Kinda sounds like your jealous. Or maybe you think you're better than him because you have a degree and he doesn't?
If you are so unhappy in this job, perhaps you should update your resume and seek something else. Be aware that some places are a lot worse.

My boss always ask me to even print his files...he can print them from his computer but he sends me an email with the file...just to click on the printer icon....the 1st time he did that I got really angry...but they I thought that there is nothing wrong....he is kind of bussy,so if I can make his life easier I will do it. Now I have a nice relationship with him. Just think that everything u do is like a seed....and one day you will have a reward on all you have done...even the smallest things will give a fruit... :-)

No degrading is being chastised for your race or ethnicity. Thinking of ones self smarter than someone who is homeless because of appearance alone. Taking from your family without thought of those who raised you. Or be-littling a religious group out of ignorance.
You have a choice.
You can find another job or talk to your boss.
Some may view degrading as judging someone on their level of formal education alone. . . . .

I am not sure what is degrading about performing your job duties.
If you do not like the duties you have been asked to do, or if you feel that they are outside the scope of your job duties, let your boss know that this is not what you signed up for and start looking for a different job.

How was that degrading? You are getting paid to do basically whatever your boss asks you to do. So either put up and shut up or find a new job!

He's probably just stupid, so maybe you could look for another position rather than put up with him. He owns the business, so he'll put you in this position to put up with it again. I would start looking right now. You're over qualified. However, don't quit until you have the new position lined up. Good luck

What he does, how he does it or doesn’t do it and who he does things with is not your concern or business. He’s your boss. You get paid to do a job, don’t you? UNLESS you are romantically involved with him: if you’re so unhappy, look for another position with another company.
