To Clarify first answer -- take the Staten Island Ferry for free, it's to the left of the Liberty Island ferry. You will get greqat views of Statue of Liberty Lower Manhattann Skyline and New York Harbor. Alslo, don't miss Central Park you can wlak there from your hotel. If you like musuems check out the Metropolitan -- other wise check out Greenwich Village -- good for restaurants and nightlife.

If you're staying a half a block from Times Square more than likely you're in Times Square. Just walk a couple of blocks on Seventh Avenue, see the TV studios, visit Madame Trussard wax museum, and BB King's, the Disney store, the huge movie theaters. Then step out of TS and sightsee.

as much as you can. Dedicate 1/2 day for midtown, then go downtown to see the statue of liberty (DO NOT PAY TO TAKE THE FERRY RIDE, Its a ripoff) Check out the WTC site and Dedicate a day for Canal street and get ALL of your souvinier shopping done there.
