Go back and look at the purchase documents and the system info as presented by the seller.

You can sell a pc without an operating system - just like you can sell a car without spark plugs if you clarify this.

If the unit does not describe any operating system then you need to buy an operating system in addition to the box itself.

I hate to say it but the ancient expression caveat emptor (which is Latin for Let the Buyer Beware) has applied since before Julius Caeser's reign and still applies today.

You may try to talk with the vendor and he may be willing to help you out on this. Before you do this, be sure to check pricing for operating systems from other dealers to make sure you have a bargain.

Anyone can sell you a computer w/o software, well if you don't want to spend money,

Have a friend download a free Operating System, Like Linux, I would recommend a user friendly version like, Ubuntu or Mandrake Linux

http://www.ubuntu.com/

Note: They're big downloads so if you have a friend with cable internet the better, also they'll come as ISO, so he/she will need to burn them to a disk as an ISO if not it will not be a bootable disk

If you bought this computer from a dealer, then go back to them and get the software that you paid for.
If you bought it from an individual retailer (like me), it may be just an error. A reputable person (like me again) will reinstall the software package and make certain that you have all the proper documentation to go with it.
If you bought it from just someone, you can ask them for the software but they may not have it or it may be pirateware.

computers come out of the box,

maybe the software is inside your computer, and you have to burn it to a CD look around a little in the start menu

if your are talking about windows XP service pack 2 you can download it off the internet for free.

Question did you get the computer on ebay or at a store?

If you got it on ebay yeah if it states no operating system then it is a legal if not you got screwed.

If you got it at the store then it should have came with an operating system

They probably made a mistake, call the company and tell them what happened, they should ship you the disks for free.

Did you buy it from a reputable retailer? If so, take it back.
